What is Multiple Sclerosis?
The Mayo Clinic website describes Multiple Sclerosis to be a condition that can potentially lead to disability, affecting the brain and spinal cord, which make up the central nervous system.
In MS, the immune system targets the protective covering of nerve fibers, known as myelin, disrupting communication between the brain and the body. Over time, this can result in permanent damage or deterioration of nerve fibers.
The signs and symptoms of MS vary greatly among individuals, depending on the extent and location of nerve fiber damage within the central nervous system. Some people with severe MS may lose their ability to walk independently, while others may experience long periods of symptom remission, depending on the type of MS they have.
