Epilepsy

What is Epilepsy?

According to the Epilepsy Foundation, and other national support organizations, Epilepsy is essentially a brain disorder that causes recurring, unprovoked seizures. An individual's doctor may diagnose you with epilepsy if you have two unprovoked seizures or one unprovoked seizure with a high risk of more. Although seizures are usually related to epilepsy, not all are the result of it. Seizures may relate to a brain injury or a family trait, but often the cause is completely unknown.

What is a seizure?

A seizure results from abnormal electrical activity in the brain, leading to temporary alterations in movement, sensation, or cognition. Seizures manifest in diverse forms, such as full-body convulsions, altered consciousness, or behavioral changes, dictated by their location within the brain. Their duration ranges from brief moments to prolonged episodes. Approximately one in 10 individuals experience a seizure during their lifetime. Seizures are categorized as either focal, originating in a specific brain area, or generalized, impacting multiple regions or the entire brain. Depending on the brain regions affected, seizures may present with various symptoms, including altered awareness, involuntary movements, sensory disturbances, heightened emotions, convulsions, or loss of consciousness. It's possible for an individual to experience multiple seizure types.
