What is Arthritis? 

Arthritis is a medical condition characterized by inflammation or swelling in one or more joints. It encompasses a group of more than 100 different conditions that affect the joints, surrounding tissues, and other connective tissues in the body. Common symptoms of arthritis include joint pain, stiffness, swelling, and decreased range of motion. Arthritis can range from mild to severe and may have varying impacts on an individual's daily life and mobility. It can affect people of all ages, genders, and ethnicities, and there are several different types of arthritis, each with its own causes, symptoms, and treatment approaches.

Types of Arthritis

Listed and described on the CDC website, there many different types of Arthritis. But, there are some that are more common including: Osteoarthritis, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Gout, Fibromyalgia, Childhood Arthritis, Psoriatic Arthritis (PsA) and Lupus.

Osteoarthritis

This is the most common form of arthritis, characterized by the gradual breakdown of cartilage in the joints, leading to pain, stiffness, and reduced range of motion.

Rheumatoid Arthritis

An autoimmune disorder where the body's immune system mistakenly attacks the synovium (the lining of the membranes that surround the joints), causing inflammation, pain, swelling, and eventual joint damage.

Gout

A type of arthritis caused by the buildup of uric acid crystals in the joints, resulting in sudden, severe pain, swelling, and redness, typically in the big toe.

Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia is a condition characterized by widespread pain throughout the body, along with sleep disturbances, fatigue, and emotional distress. Individuals with fibromyalgia may experience heightened sensitivity to pain, known as abnormal pain processing.

Childhood Arthritis

Arthritis that occurs in children under the age of 16 and persists for at least six weeks. It includes several subtypes, each with its own symptoms and characteristics.

Lupus

An autoimmune disease that can affect various organs and tissues, including the joints, causing arthritis-like symptoms along with other systemic manifestations.

Psoriatic Arthritis (PsA)

A type of arthritis that occurs in some people with the skin condition psoriasis. It can affect any joint in the body and may cause joint pain, stiffness, swelling, and skin lesions.
